7 things your small business homepage should make clear

Your homepage has a few seconds to answer the questions that matter. Use this practical checklist to make it clearer and easier to use.

1. What you actually do

Say what you offer in plain language near the top of the page. “Helping local businesses with bookkeeping” is clearer than “Innovative financial solutions”.

2. Who you help

Tell visitors who your service is for. A line such as “Accountancy for freelancers and small businesses” helps the right people recognise themselves.

3. Why someone should choose you

Offer specific reasons to trust you. This could be relevant experience, clear pricing, real customer feedback or examples of your work. Avoid vague claims like “industry-leading”.

4. What to do next

Choose one main action for each section, such as “Request a quote” or “Book a call”. Make buttons descriptive and easy to find.

5. What it costs or how pricing works

You do not always need to show an exact price, but explain whether you offer fixed fees, starting prices or bespoke quotes. Uncertainty can stop people enquiring.

6. Whether it works on a phone

Check your homepage on a real mobile device. Can visitors read the text, use the menu and tap buttons without zooming?

7. Whether the important information is easy to find

Ask someone unfamiliar with your business to look at your homepage for 20 seconds. Then ask what you offer, who it is for and how they would get in touch. If they struggle, your page may need simplifying.

One practical next step

Pick one change you can make this week. Often, clearer wording and a more obvious next step will do more than adding another section.
