5 simple ways to ask better customer survey questions
A short survey can give you useful direction, but only when the questions are easy to understand and answer honestly.
1. Ask one thing at a time
Avoid “How satisfied are you with our prices and customer service?” A customer might love one and dislike the other. Split it into two questions.
2. Keep the wording neutral
“How helpful was our excellent support team?” pushes people towards a positive answer. Ask “How would you rate the support you received?” instead.
3. Make answer options fit real life
If you ask how often someone uses your service, make sure the options cover realistic frequencies without overlapping.
4. Include a genuine way to say “not applicable”
Not every customer will have used every feature or service. A “Not applicable” or “I have not used this” option can prevent misleading answers.
5. Decide what you will do with the answer
Before adding a question, ask yourself what decision it will help you make. If you cannot name one, consider removing it.
One practical next step
Try your survey with two or three people before sending it widely. Ask them to explain what each question means to them. Their feedback can help you catch confusing wording.
